Mariah Carey
Real Name: Mariah Carey
Date of Birth: 27 March 1969
Place of birth: Long Island, NY
Profession: Actress/Singer
Mariah Carey came on to the music scene in 1990, after coming out of virtually nowhere. Her 1990 debut was entitled “Mariah Carey”, and reached number one months after its debut. The album went on to sell millions and also had four singles that shot up the charts. The album’s success was not quick to stop, and she received two Grammy awards for her work on the self-titled album. Mariah came out with another successful album in 1993. This time the album was entitled “Music Box”, and it has since sold ten million copies. Her next album was released under the moniker “Daydream”, but the most fascinating facet of the album was the single, “Fantasy”, which debuted at first place on the Billboard Singles Chart, which made history. The other single was “One Sweet Day”, which also did its part in climbing the charts and putting her second to only the Beatles and Elvis when it comes to singles chart status. 1999’s “Rainbow” only furthered the success that Mariah had endured in the early nineties. The song “Heartbreaker” broke a Beatles record, and demonstrated Mariah’s ability to be on the singles chart for every year of that decade. Her next great string of success came long after 2001’s “Glitter”, which was a failure, and put Mariah in dire mental straights for more than a year.
Mariah’s comeback came in 2005, when she seem revitalized and had gotten back in shape after a depressing string of mental and physical setbacks. Her “The Emancipation of Mimi” saw her musical talent revived, and it also saw her streak of number one hits return with the songs, “We Belong Together” and “Don’t Forget About Us”.
Interesting Facts
Mariah experienced an interesting year in 2001. Her publicist issued statements describing her need for mental rehabilitation after she entered a rehab center in Connecticut. The affair grew even more interesting because of its consequential occurrence after the failure of her film, “Glitter”. “Glitter” was absolutely abhorred by critics, and was speculated by some to be the end of her career. This speculation was only furthered by Virgin’s buying out of Mariah’s contract, which was a reported $80 million dollar deal. All of this occurred in a small span of time and had an insurmountable impact on Carey’s demeanor. Her mental state still did not seem to be normal as she often called Carson Daly from her bathtub, during the taping of MTV’s “Total Request Live”. The ultimate revival of her career in 2004-5 made the occurrences of the previous years more poetic, and magnified the success was soon to experience.
Because of Mariah’s previous failures, her worth as a talent had gone down when Island Records signed her to a $21 million contract, which was only one fourth of the contract that had previously been offered to her by Virgin for the same amount of records.
She was married to Sony executive Tommy Mottola, who was viewed by the press as an adulterous man, who eventually was divorced from Carey, after a relatively short marriage.
