Avril Lavigne’s New Hit Jumps Backwards
Friday, April 27, 2007
Canadian punk-pop singer Avril Lavigne popped up at #1 this week on Billboard’s Top 200 chart for albums, selling over a quarter of a million copies of her new album, “The Best Damn Thing.” Worldwide, it’s sold over 1.5 million from her previous two successes and from the hit single, “Girlfriend.” Or has it? The numbers might have been inflated from a sales ploy. The new album has two versions, the censored and the explicit version. The cheaper censored version isn’t labeled, so fans are buying the censored version by mistake when they don’t necessarily want the bonus DVD that quietly identifies the explicit version. She calls the new album easily the best she’s made. Rolling Stones praises it for its emotion and sass. On the flip side, some fans have complained about the cursing and brattiness Avril unabashedly adds to this album atop what… Read full article
Kirsten Dunst Much to Learn
Friday, April 27, 2007
With “Spider-Man 3” out of filming, soon-to-be-25 Kirsten Dunst can take a break from the action scenes she doesn’t care for, anyway. She eagerly works on developing “Sweet Relief,” a drama based on a true story of a woman who died in an Iraq car bombing in 2005. American-born Marla Ruzicka founded the Campaign for Innocent Victims in Conflict and visited Iraq to count casualties and count victims. Dunst looks forward to playing the challenging role in the film that will (hopefully) be in theaters in 2009. Next month’s issue of Jane features Dunst and “Spider-Man 3” costar Bryce Dallas Howard on the cover. Dunst says she wishes she were in her costar’s place: happily married with a child. But for that, she needs a boyfriend, and she’s lately filled that role with Johnny Borrell, the front man for Razorlight. She does want to soon be at… Read full article
Kate Beckinsale’s Vacancies
Friday, April 27, 2007
British actress Kate Beckinsale can’t seem to win. The 33-year-old plays a variety of roles to avoid typecasting, and some critics complain that she only suits whatever type of movie they first saw her in. The genre-tweaking films she tends to star in are liked or loathed by critics, and her subtle acting gets the same response. Her recently released film “Vacancy” also falls prey to these problems, the film’s title describing the status of the theater seats. Many critics bemoan “Vacancy” as morbid and cliché even for a horror flick. Some happily relate that it succeeds where many horror flicks fail because it makes us actually care about the characters involved. Beckinsale plays the wife in a marriage about to end in divorce from incompatible methods of coping, though they still love each other. Their 3-year-old son died in a wreck when his mother was driving,… Read full article
No View for Rosie O’Donnell
Thursday, April 26, 2007
A few of us were surprised and many were not at hearing that Rosie O’Donnell is leaving the television show, The View, officially in mid-June this year. This popular daytime chat show has provided a lot of entertainment for viewers worldwide, and much of its popularity is due to Rosie’s exuberant personality as co-host and moderator of the panel. There has been a lot of controversy, however, associated with Rosie, as she has been in and out of the news for stating her opinions and views publicly and on the air. After a successful one-year season, representatives from ABC, the show’s sponsor, were unable to reach an agreement with Ms O’Donnell on the term of the next contract. ABC wanted to renew for three years, and Rosie was only willing to sign for one, but she did agree to return from time to time as a guest on the… Read full article

Joe Simpson is otherwise and better known as the overbearing dad and manager of Jessica Simpson and her sister Ashlee Simpson. Britney recently fired her manager Larry Rudolph. Her father, Jamie Spears, has publicly defended Rudolph. Her father’s support of Rudolph is being seen as a tacit opposition to Spears, leading to a war of words between father and daughter.
