Beyoncé BET Awards 2007

Beyoncé Knowles walked away from this year’s BET Awards ceremony with two trophies for her work over the past year.

The twenty-five year old opened the ceremony duetting with Jennifer Holliday on And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going before the winners were announced.  As well as winning Best Female R&B Artist and Video Of The Year (for her recent single Irreplaceable, her fourth solo number one in the US charts) the singer/actress had been nominated in four other categories, twice as many as any other artist.

These prizes add to her collection as she also won in two categories in 2004 – Best Collaboration (for Crazy In Love) and again for Best Female R&B Artist.  2007 has been a good year for Beyoncé who has so far won several awards for both her musical and movie careers and she was also named as AskMen.com’s most desirable woman.

The Black Entertainment Television network began the awards scheme in 2001 to celebrate African Americans in the entertainment industry and has since become an annual event.  Each year the show is televised and it is becoming increasingly popular as time goes on.

Jennifer Hudson, who was Beyoncé’s co-star in the 2006 blockbuster Dreamgirls, also collected two gongs – for Best Actress and Best New Artist.  Although this was Jennifer’s first appearance at a BET ceremony, Beyoncé has been there from the start and has performed, either by herself or as part of Destiny’s Child, at five of the seven shows.

Other award winners include tennis star Serena Williams, male R&B artist Ne-Yo and dance act Gnarls Barkley.  There was also a lifetime achievement award for Diana Ross for her services to the music industry in her fifty year career.  Winners and nominees were chosen by a panel made up of executives from the media and the entertainment industries.
