Britney Spears Comeback Fails To Excite
Monday, September 10, 2007
Britney Spears long-awaited comeback turned out to be a major anti-climax as the 25-year-old star failed to excite when she performed at the MTV Video Music Awards.
Dressed in a bra and briefs, which did little to hide the fact that she is seriously out of shape, Spears badly-mimed performance of her new single Gimme More lacked the energy and sass that shot her to stardom.
It was her first major performance in three years after the singer put her career on hold in 2004 following her marriage to Kevin Federline. The following three years have been turbulent ones for Spears as she has had two children, divorced Federline, been to rehab and is currently fighting a high-profile battle with Federline for the custody of their two sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James.
After Britney’s lacklustre opening act, the awards show recovered as the night went on. The female artist of the year award went to Fergie, while Rihanna won monster single of the year and best video for Umbrella.
Beyonce, who narrowly avoided a ‘wardrobe malfunction’, and Shakira’s Beuatiful Liar won the prize for most earth-shattering collaboration.
Spears’ ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake was named best male artist.
