Britney Spears Not Yet Grown?

Friday, March 23, 2007

Twenty–five-year-old Britney Spears still isn’t revealing why she checked herself into the $48 thousand Promises Malibu Alcohol and Drug Rehab program, though she has been known to have alcohol problems before and rumours suggest the problem is substance abuse.  She checked herself in a month ago after an array of bizarre behaviour.  (She’d shaved her head, gotten a wrist tattoo of tiny lips, and hit a car with an umbrella besides the much-publicized underwear incident.)

She may have admitted herself into the center, but that doesn’t mean she’s kept the rules.  Cell phones aren’t permitted at Promises, but Spears evidently smuggled one in.  She’s been overheard pleading in her closet to a “Justin” to come support her at AA meetings.  People suspect this “Justin” is Justin Timberlake, her former lover who she has repeatedly begged to visit.

Timberlake sent her a support letter, but Spears’ mother said a visit would be unneeded strain for Britney.  He’s supportive of her recovery, but he insists that he’s not rejoining his ex-girlfriend.  Rumours that he is were the fault of the media desiring another soap opera.

Her manager says Promises released her after a successful completion of the program, but Spears reportedly fears her release.  She’s spent two-thirds of her #32 million fortune in the past two years alone, so worry about going broke dominates over her required concentration to stay sober.

Lindsay Lohan’s mother has stepped to the plate to defend Spears, criticizing her mother for not coming forward to help her daughter.  Spears is just a kid who’s trying to get out of the limelight, she says, and others point out that Spears was a celebrity at an age when most kids are growing up.  Youth celebrity prevents a normal transition to grow-up, and Spears’ immaturity might just be signs that she’s still trying to grow up.
