Eve Pleads ‘No Contest’ in DUI Case
Friday, June 29, 2007
Female celebrity and hip-hop star Eve Jihan Jeffers (Eve), pleaded no contest to driving with a blood-alcohol content greater than the legal limit this Thursday. As a result, Eve will be required to wear an alcohol-detecting ankle bracelet for 45 days. The female rapper turned actress was not in court at the time her attorney entered the plea, which, under an established plea agreement, allowed a second count for driving under the influence against Eve to be dropped.
Eve was originally arrested in the early hours of April 26th after she struck a Hollywood Boulevard median in her gold Maserati. Originally facing a maximum of six months jail time and a $1,000 fine, Eve only received 36 months probation and a $390 fine after the no contest plea. She will also face fees and restitution for repairs to the median, potentially bumping her total bill to more than $1,400.
As a first time alcohol offender, Eve will also be required to attend ten (10) Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and participate in a three month long alcohol education program. Though not personally in court this past Thursday, Eve will be required to appear on July 20 and display proof that she has enrolled in the education program and is wearing the ankle monitor. As with any legal issues involving celebrities, authorities were quick to report a lack of favor for the rapper.
Frank Mateljan, a spokesman for the city attorney’s office, says Eve received no special treatment. “This was handled like any other of our DUI cases,” said Mateljan. “This was an appropriate sentence, we believe, for the facts of the case.” Mateljan also detailed the terms of Eve’s monitored status. Should Jeffers test positive once, her 45 day monitoring period would start over. A second positive test by Eve would require 10 day in the county jail.
Also like other female celebrities as of late, the legal issues have not seemed to dampen support for the actress and singer’s motivation to continue work. Eve Jihan Jeffers is still in production on two new movies scheduled to release in 2008 - “Flashback of a Fool” and “Ego” in addition to continuing to hone her music career. Delayed production of movies or upcoming albums pursuant to the new fashion accessory of the ankle bracelet Eve is required to wear have not been disclosed.
