Jennifer Hudson handed role

Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson has been handed a role in Sex and the City: The Movie.

According to reports, she will play Carrie Bradshaw’s assistant in the eagerly awaited film.

The Dreamgirls actress has shot to stardom in just a couple of years and now she is set to star alongside Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon and Kim Cattrall in the silver screen follow up to the hit TV series, according to Variety.

The movie has been written by Michael Patrick King, who executive produced the TV series. And he will also take the director’s chair when filming begins later this month.

The film will rejoin the lives of Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte four years on from where the TV series ended.

Sex and the City is one of the most popular TV shows of recent times and is set to attract fans to theatres in droves.

Landing this role marks another step in Hudson’s remarkable rise to fame. After receiving limited exposure for coming sixth in the final of 2002’s American Idol: The Search for a Superstar it looked like she would fade into obscurity.

However, she fought off the competition of 750 competitors to land herself a dream make-or-break role as Effie Melody White in the movie version of Broadway musical Dreamgirls.

Jennifer Hudson made the role her own and let her true potential shine to capture the attention and hearts of the movie-going nation. As well as an academy award, her performance won her the National Board of Review (for “Breakthrough Performance"), a New York Film Critics Award, a Golden Satellite Award, a Golden Globe Award, the British Film Award and the Phoenix Film Critic’s Society Award.
