Kylie Minogue

Pop star Kylie Minogue has been signed up to play a major role in this year’s Christmas special of Doctor Who.

The storyline for the show, Voyage of the Damned, will link in with the end of series three that was shown in the UK this weekend.

Last year, the Doctor Who special that was aired on BBC on Christmas day attracted an audience of 9.4 million viewers.

Kylie Minogue is best known for her singing career, which includes hits such as I Should Be So Lucky, Spinning Around and Can’t Get You Out Of My Head and the Australian singer is currently working on her tenth studio album.

However, she also has vast amounts of acting experience ranging from films such as Moulin Rouge and Street Fighter to appearing in television soaps.  In fact, Kylie started her career as an actress, finding fame in the popular Aussie soap Neighbours.

Her role as Charlene in this show earned her three awards – a Silver Logie for “Most Popular Actress” in both 1987 and 1988 and a Gold Logie in 1988 for “Most Popular Personality on Australian Television”.

Kylie’s career was put on hold in midway through a world tour in 2005 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.  The subsequent surgery and chemotherapy were successful and with her recovery complete, Kylie returned to performing in November 2006.  Her father had previously experienced a similar disease, surviving cancer to the prostate.

Talent obviously runs in the Minogue family.  Kylie’s younger sister Dannii has enjoyed success as a singer, an actress and as a model although not on the same scale as Kylie.  The pair get on well, enjoying a professional as well as a personal relationship – Dannii duetted with Kylie at several gigs on her comeback tour.

Filming for the Christmas Doctor Who with Kylie Minogue begins in Cardiff, Wales, later this month.
