Lil’ Kim Facing Legal Action
Friday, September 14, 2007
Lil’ Kim is facing legal action along with 50 Cent over their 2003 track Magic Stick.
New York record producer Carlos Evans has filed a law suit against the rappers claiming that he is owed royalties from record company Atlantic Records.
The popular track, which hit the number two spot in the Billboard Hot 100, appeared on Lil’ Kim’s La Bella Mafia album.
Evans, who produced and mixed the song, claims he was promised $7,500 plus royalties and alleges that his requests for payment have been snubbed by Atlantic Records.
Now, he is seeking $2m in damages after court papers were filed at Manhattan’s state Supreme Court this week.
A spokesman for Rotten Apple, a subsidiary of Atlantic Records, has claimed that Mr Evans will be paid what he is owed once the accounting is sorted out.
Lil’ Kim is no stranger to the courtroom having been jailed in March 2005 for conspiracy and perjury after she lied to a jury about a 2001 shooting.
However, she used her time behind bars well, writing over 200 songs before her release on July 3, 2006.
Lil ‘Kim, real name Kimberley Denise Jones, got her rap breakthrough with Brooklyn based group Junior M.A.F.I.A. in the early nineties. She began her solo career in 1995 and released her first debut album, Hard Core, in November 1996. It was an instant success, selling 74,000 copies in the first week alone.
Her rise to stardom continued through the nineties and in 2000 her second album, The Notorius Kim, went platinum.
In 2003, Lil’ Kim’s album, La Bella Mafia received critical acclaim.
