Melissa Etheridge may have her Oscar dream come true. The 45 year old rocker has been nominated for her song “I Need to Wake Up”, which is the theme song to Al Gore’s film, An Inconvenient Truth. The film has won acclaim for it’s telling of the effects of global warming.
Al Gore asked Melissa Etheridge if she would write the theme song for the movie.
Melissa Etheridge, who has won several Grammys for her raspy voiced love songs, states that she had no idea how big the film would become. She also states that she had trouble starting the song. Etheridge told the Associated Press that, when she first started writing the theme, all she could think of was the 70’s anti pollution slogan, “Give a hoot, don’t pollute”. Etheridge went on to say that it was her partner, Tammy, who got her started. Tammy told Etheridge, “Just do what you do. You write about what you feel. Tell people how you feel. “
Tammy and Melissa Etheridge were united in a commitment ceremony in 2003. The couple have two boys, twins, Johnnie Rose and Miller Steven, born in October 2006. Etheridge who is as much known for being a lesbian, as she is for being a rocker, has two other children from her relationship with Julie Cypher. Etheridge and Cypher’s children were fathered by rock legend David Crosby through artificial insemination.
A cancer survivor, Etheridge, has had her hard ships but keeps her sense of humor. She performed bald (due to chemo therapy) with Joss Stone during the 2005 Grammy awards. Afterwards, she said of the Grammys, “They sat me next to Lance Armstrong. I guess they wanted the cancer patients sitting together”
The 79th Annual Academy Awards are set for February 25 in Los Angeles.
