Wednesday, August 08, 2007
Mia Farrow, best known for her role in ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ and her contentious, long-term relationship with Woody Allen, wants to exchange places with Darfur rebel Suleiman Jamous, who is in a U.N. hospital with abdominal problems. Jamous is a key link between Darfur rebels and aid workers in the Sudanese region.
According to her Website, a letter written by the 62-year-old actress/activist to President Al-Bashir, Farrow stated; “as you are undoubtedly aware, Mr. Jamous is in need of a medical procedure that cannot be carried out in Kadugli. I am therefore offering to take Mr. Jamous’ place to exchange my freedom for his, in the knowledge of his importance to the civilians of Darfur and in the conviction that he will apply his energies toward creating the just and lasting peace that the Sudanese people deserve and hope for.”
Suleiman Jamous has permission from the U.N to leave, but fears arrest or government reprisal. Jamous is a leader of one of Darfur’s largest rebel groups, the Sudan Liberation Army and was seized last year.
Mia Farrow has devoted much of her time lately to humanitarian causes. She has been associated with UNICEF since December 1998 when she attended the celebration of 50 years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights at the U.N. in New York.
Mia Farrow’s first mission for UNICEF was as a goodwill ambassador to Nigeria in January 2001 and helped to launce a national polio immunization day in an effort to reach every child under five. Farrow suffered from polio as a child.
Farrow always had a great interest in children and began adopting before the practice became a common occurrence with actors of today, such as Madonna and Angelina Jolie.
Mia Farrow has three biological children from husband Andre Previn and three who were adopted. She has one biological child from her relationship with Woody Allen and adopted two. The Allen-Farrow relationship went caput when Allen began a sexual relationship with adopted daughter Soon-Yi-Previn, whom he later married.
