Sarah Silverman Hits Below The Belt

After Britney Spears’ disastrous performance at the MTV Video Music Awards, Sarah Silverman took the stage.  Known for being ever the uncompromising and sometimes offensive comedian, Silverman didn’t disappoint.  Sarah lashed into Spears like a whip, and certainly didn’t spare her feelings in the least bit.  Did Silverman go to far this time?  Silverman opened her monologue with a slur on Britney’s trodden career, saying, “Wasn’t that incredible? Britney Spears, everyone. Wow. She is amazing. She is 25-years-old and she’s already accomplished everything she’s going to accomplish in her life. It’s mind blowing.”

Sarah Silverman continued her Britney beat down by bringing the kids into it – she may have crossed the line when she said, “Have you seen Britney’s kids? Oh my god, they are the most adorable mistakes you will ever see! They are as cute as the hairless vagina they came out of.” Even those true to Silverman say that the slurs on Britney’s kids went just a hair too far.  Britney’s camp, however, is using Sarah’s monologue as an excuse for why her performance was lifeless and uninspiring, saying that Britney was emotionally disturbed and troubled after hearing Sarah rehearses right before the show.

Sources close to the show, however, insist that Sarah didn’t rehears at all before the performance, saying, “The only person who knew what Sarah was going to say was Sarah.” Silverman’s rep says of her comments, “Sarah did nothing but react to Britney’s actions in a comical way, which is what she was asked to do.” Of course Silverman is paid to entertain and has always been known for her abrasive comedy, but many are saying that Sarah’s comments about Britney’s children were clearly below the belt.  Still, some are commending Silverman for not being afraid to go there.  Silverman, however, is no virgin to criticism – comedy is bound to offend someone, right?
