Monday, April 23, 2007
Sheryl Crow, the Grammy winning rocker, has been visiting college campuses in an effort to raise awareness about global warming. Her companion for the ride is Laurie David, who directed the Oscar winning film, ‘The Inconvenient Truth‘.
The pair traveled around the United States in a bus that that uses biodiesel fuel. They visited 12 college campuses in an effort to raise awareness. As part of their campaign, Sheryl Crow put on free concerts, says Crow, “This is a whole bunch of people dedicating their time, their lives, working for free, for a mission. And it is the most important mission.”
The tour was planned to end in Washington, D.C. on Earth Day. Part of their agenda is to raise support for a campaign to get Congress to enact a bill to impose mandatory curbs on carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases within two years.
The two women planned to meet with House Energy Chairman John Dingell, D-Michigan., and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid D-Nevada., on Monday.
“I just feel like if this isn’t addressed by this administration, if this administration isn’t hearing this message loud and clear, then I feel like there’s an irresponsibility,” Crow said.
On Sunday night Crow and David hosted an Earth Day concert at George Washington University. Among the performers were Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, and Carole King. Also speaking at the concert was David’s husband, Larry, a comedian and producer best known as co-creator of the TV show “Seinfeld,” and environmental advocate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
“Hurricane Katrina is just a taste of what’s to come if we don’t stop global warming”, said Robert Kennedy, Jr.
Crow opened the show with her hit song, ‘A Change Would Do You Good,’ before doing a duet with Carol King on Kings hit, ‘I Feel the Earth Move’.
